At Mountain Fare, it is our goal to live consciously and to reflect a commitment to conservation. Our linens are washed in solar heated hot water at Pemi Valley Laundry in Plymouth. We compost about 80% of our garbage, which, in turn, feeds our gardens. We do not use chemical fertilizers on our grounds or gardens. We use largely all-natural cleaning products. We shop locally on a regular basis and buy as many of our food products as possible from local farms. We have enormous respect for our White Mountain Region and share in its protection. We are heartened to find that many of our guests share this same quest. Mountain Fare is honored to have dedicated return guests- a kind, active and wonderfully interesting group of people.
About Us
Susan and Nick Preston have owned, enjoyed and stewarded the Mountain Fare Inn property in Campton since 1982. They came to the area in 1980 as freestyle ski coaches for the Waterville Valley Ski Club and proceeded to raise two boys and run two businesses – Mountain Fare and Freestyle America, a summer freestyle training program that operates out of Whistler, BC, Mount Hood, Lake Placid and Waterville Valley to this day.
Mountain Fare Inn is truly a ski lodge run by skiers for skiers! A steady stream of upgrades and improvements have resulted in a beautiful and peaceful environment for travelers, athletes, teams, skiers/snow sports, hikers and folks escaping to the White Mountains. This Campton Village property offers access to year-round activities and natural beauty. Located perfectly in the midst of Northern New England, it is a natural stop for anyone wandering from the NY Adirondacks to the coast of Maine or from Montreal to Cape Cod.
History of The Inn
In the 1830s, the property was a Pemi Valley subsistence homestead in a rural community surrounded by logging, hunting, trapping and trading, river commerce and eventually railroads. It has a long history as a guest house dating to the early 1900s when travelers came by train to the White Mountains for the summer. At one point, the local telephone exchange operated out of this building. When Mount Tecumseh (Waterville Valley Ski Area) was developed into a major eastern ski Area in 1960, the Thompson family renovated the attached barn into guest rooms and a dining room and proceeded to run a full-service lodge to skiers passing by on the Old Waterville Road.
Our secondary structure, The Carriage House (The Barn), was an old barn that was renovated beginning in 1989. With its three spacious guest rooms, warm, inviting game room and a sauna, it is a favorite gathering venue for groups of friends or families during ski season or for graduations, retreats, reunions and summer hiking trips.
Bordering the White Mountains and Lakes Region of New Hampshire, Mountain Fare Inn offers easy access to many local attractions and recreation including Franconia Notch, The Science Center of NH, Lost River, Owl’s Nest golf, boating on Squam and Newfound Lakes, alpine and cross country skiing, hiking the Whites, bouldering in Rumney, mountain and road biking, tubing on the Pemi, tennis at Waterville Valley Resort, Alpine Adventure zip lines, Polar Caves, and a soccer field on the premises. We are conveniently located near Plymouth State University, Holderness School, New Hampton School, Plymouth area summer camps and Waterville Valley Academy.
